The seven productions currently being shot on the island are pumping some $14.5 million into the island economy and generating nearly 700 jobs, Puerto Rico Film Commission Executive Director Mariella Pérez said.
The filming, which is in various stages of production, is keeping local industry players, including four technical crews, basically working around the clock, she said.
Currently under production on the island are the TV series “The Big C” (Showtime), “White Color” (USA Network), and “Das Traumschiff” (German TV station ZDF).
The full-length feature films “Welcome To The Jungle,” “Broche de oro” and “Riding 79” are also being shot on the island.
Disney has launched pre-production of its “Teen Beach Musical” and is basing that work out of the new studio in Bayamón. The company, which has produced four other projects in Puerto Rico over the past two years, has set a $6.7 million budget for local work on “Teen Beach Musical.”
“We are seeing the payoff of efforts over the past three years to strengthen and maintain a dynamic film industry that takes advantage of Puerto Rico’s natural attributes and infrastructure,” Pérez said.
Economic Development & Commerce Secretary José Pérez touted the success of recently implemented incentives in luring international productions and the strategic investment in local productions.
Films mean direct and indirect jobs and get money flowing through the island economy, he said.
“Welcome To The Jungle,” starring action hero Jan Claude Van Damme, is projected to pump $2.6 million into the Puerto Rico economy.
Showtime has budgeted $1.2 million for local shooting for its “The Big C” series, while USA Networks will spend $2.2 million on “White Collar” in Puerto Rico. Germany’s NDF has earmarked $415,000 for “Das Traumschiff.”
The Puerto Rico Film Commission tapped its sales-tax fed cinema fund for local productions “Broche de oro” ($500,000) and “Riding 79” ($800,000).
Puerto Rico’s aggressive incentives, solid infrastructure and sound legal protections are continuing to pay off in the effort to grab film industry attention.
Puerto Rico’s new Film Industry Economic Incentives Law improves on the current available incentives to increase the number of film projects produced in Puerto Rico. It is aimed, at least in part, to keep the island ahead of competitors such as the Dominican Republic, which has upgraded its own set of economic lures.
In 2009, the film industry in Puerto Rico generated $118 million in economic activity. In 2010, 12 projects were filmed on the island, creating 17,528 jobs and 22,671 hotel nights. A dozen movies, TV series and documentaries shot in Puerto Rico pumped another $70 million into the island economy in 2010, according to the Puerto Rico Film Commission.
Since 1999, more than 60 productions have taken advantage of incentive programs in Puerto Rico for film and creative services, including recent big-budget films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean 4,” “Fast Five” and “The Rum Diary.”
Pérez has said the island’s incentives package isn’t the only draw, noting that producers like that Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, where the currency is the American dollar, and U.S. citizens don’t need a worker’s visa or a passport.
Leading industry publication Variety has trumpeted Puerto Rico’s varied settings, noting that the island has stood in for Iraq, Vietnam, Spain, Brazil, Cuba and various other “far-flung places” as filmmakers increasingly look to the island for its diverse backdrops and talented local crews.
