“Todos los puertorriqueños que creemos que la voluntad del Pueblo se respeta sentimos que hemos sido inicialmente defraudados por Obama”

En la página 25 del Informe del Grupo de Trabajo del presidente Obama Sobre el Estatus de Puerto Rico del 2011 se expresa lo siguiente: “El Grupo de Trabajo recomienda que todas las partes pertinentes —el Presidente, Congreso y los líderes y residentes de Puerto Rico— trabajen para asegurar que los puertorriqueños puedan expresar su voluntad sobre las opciones de estatus y que se cumpla su voluntad para fines del 2012 o poco después”.

Más adelante expresa: “el Grupo de Trabajo recomienda que el Presidente y el Congreso apoyen cualquier esfuerzo justo, transparente y expeditivo que refleje y esté conforme con la voluntad del pueblo puertorriqueño. Si el proceso produce un resultado claro, el Congreso debe actuar al respecto rápidamente, con el respaldo del Presidente”.

El pasado 6 de noviembre se llevó a cabo un plebiscito en el que 54% de los electores expresó que no deseaba seguir en el actual estado territorial (colonial). Los gobernados se negaron a continuar consintiendo el actual estatus de gobierno. Además, un 61% de los electores expresó que deseaba moverse hacia la estadidad como fórmula preferida de estatus.

Tres semanas después, la Casa Blanca se expresó por medio del portavoz para asuntos latinos, Víctor Miranda, en términos de que los resultados del plebiscito habían sido claros.
Ahora procede que el presidente Obama actúe con premura tal como se comprometió.

La primera oportunidad que tuvo para hacer valer su compromiso, el Presidente la desaprovechó. En su mensaje al Congreso del pasado martes 12 de febrero no hizo mención alguna sobre opciones para resolver el estatus de Puerto Rico.

Todos los puertorriqueños que creemos que la voluntad del Pueblo se respeta sentimos que hemos sido inicialmente defraudados por el Presidente. A esos efectos lo que inmediatamente procede es que todos los que así nos sentimos enviemos a la Casa Blanca el siguiente mensaje dirigido al Presidente:

Dear mister President:

We are very disappointed by your neglect to make any reference in the State of the Union Address before the 113th Congress, to the plight of the 3.6 million American citizens residing in Puerto Rico’s shameful colonial status that we have endured for 115 years under the United States’ hegemony.

Although we are pleased to know, that you and the Congress are in the process of moving forward with an immigration reform that will grant the 11 million immigrants living unlawfully in this country, the U.S. citizenship with all the rights, privileges and responsibilities that are discriminately denied to Puertorricans that have been U.S. citizens since 1917 and have fought, shed their blood and given their lives in all U.S. wars to preserve our democratic way of living, we also consider it profoundly unfair and demoralizing to the legions of U.S. born citizens living in Puerto Rico who remain disenfranchised in a less than equal citizenship status for the only reason that they are residents of Puerto Rico, that you did not make any commitment to solve our centennial undignified colonial status.

Puerto Rico deserves to have the same rights and treatment that all American citizens enjoy. This is a moral imperative matter.

We sincerely hope that your neglect to make any reference to the Puerto Rico status issue in your address to Congress is in no way a reflection of a lack of priority to pay attention to the will of the people of the island as expressed in the November 6, 2012 plebiscite where 54% percent of the voters rejected the current Commonwealth territorial status, thus removing the consent of the governed to this discriminatory status, and demanding a non colonial status. In the second question on the same plebiscite, the residents of Puerto Rico were given the option to select their preferred non colonial status, and statehood obtained a super majority of 61%.

We are fully aware that you have a very difficult agenda for the next four years but we remind you that we have expressed our will as you requested from us in The President’s Task Force on Puerto Rico’s Status Report and that now it is up to you and Congress to act upon its Recommendation No. 1 that “ all relevant parties —the President, Congress, and the leadership and people of Puerto Rico— work to ensure that Puerto Ricans are able to express their will about status options and have that will acted upon by the end of 2012 or soon thereafter”.
