Asked yesterday about Puerto Rico at a campaign event, Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke stated:

«The only way I see us being able to permanently resolve the problem of a permanent second class status for the citizens of Puerto Rico is to ensure that they are a state; they have two senators who can vote, that they are fighting daily and day out for their rights, their protections… Puerto Rico needs to have that first class status. It wont get it until it’s a full first class state.»

Both Democrats and Republicans have historically supported statehood for the island.  We are excited about this latest high-level call for full civil rights and equality for the U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico.  We thank Congressman O’Rourke for his leadership and advocacy on this fundamental issue of American democracy.
