Last week, a bipartisan delegation led by representatives Darren Soto (D-FL) and Jennifer González-Colón (R-PR) introduced H.R. 1522, the Puerto Rico Statehood Admission Act of 2021.
The bill, written in response to the results of the November 2020 statehood vote, sets the terms under which Puerto Rico would be offered admission as a state of the Union, but leaves the ultimate decision up to the voters on the island via a ratification plebiscite.
Meanwhile, others in Congress want to delay statehood for Puerto Rico by enacting a convoluted «status convention», which fails to acknowledge the self-determination that already took place last November. The fact is an indisputable majority of Puerto Rico’s voters said «YES» to equal rights and full democracy through statehood, and Congress must respond to that vote with a formal offer of admission. Justice delayed, after all, is justice denied. 51 co-sponsors Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle are standing up for Puerto Rico by co-sponsoring H.R. 1522, but we need your help to get more members to support this bill. Contact your U.S. Representative today and ask them to stand up for democracy by co-sponsoring the Puerto Rico Statehood Admission Act!
