he island’s manufacturing sector bounced back in September after being hit by stormy weather the previous month, the latest Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) shows.
The PMI surged above the threshold to 54.4 in September, after two consecutive months below the threshold.

A reading above the threshold value of 50 suggests an expansion in the manufacturing sector with respect to the previous month.

All five PMI sub-indexes increased from August to September, and all five PMI sub-indexes were above the threshold in September.

The supplier deliveries PMI remained at or above the threshold for the fifth consecutive month, while the employment PMI rose above the threshold following four consecutive months below.

In September, the new orders PMI moved further up above the threshold to 54.4, indicating that new orders at manufacturing establishments in September were higher than in August.

The production PMI rose further above the threshold to 57.4 in September, a sign that manufacturing production in September was higher than in August. According to one manufacturing establishment, the increases in production have been the result of a need to reduce a backlog of pending orders.

In September, the employment PMI jumped up above the threshold to 51.5, following four consecutive months below.

The supplier deliveries PMI moved up to 57.4, remaining at or above the threshold for the fifth consecutive month, an indication of higher demand for intermediate goods.

The own inventories PMI climbed above the threshold to 51.5 in September. In August, the own inventories PMI had dipped below the threshold following eight consecutive months above it.

Weather conditions in August — particularly the lashing from Hurricane Irene — impacted business activity in an unfavorable way in 84 percent of manufacturing establishments. According to one such establishment, the weather caused delays in manufacturing operations and additional costs for restarting production. Another manufacturing establishment indicated that despite the fact that some hours of work were lost, they were compensated for during the rest of the month by working overtime.

The PMI was at or above the threshold in 12 of the past 17 months since the survey began.

The PMI is currently available only on a non-seasonally adjusted (NSA) basis, which means that seasonal fluctuations can affect its performance. Once sufficient data is available, a seasonally adjusted version of the PMI will be prepared, the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics said.

The PMI is the result of a collaborative project between the Puerto Rico Manufacturers Association, Scotiabank and the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics. The PMI measures short-run business conditions in Puerto Rico’s manufacturing sector, and provides a broad-based metric for the productive side of Puerto Rico’s economy. It is currently in a testing phase to ensure a reliable methodology.

The methodology is similar to PMI surveys conducted elsewhere. The participants include manufacturing establishments with 50 or more employees with membership in the Puerto Rico Manufacturers Association.

The survey questionnaire is available at www.estadisticas.gobierno.pr.
