As a proud American citizen from Puerto Rico, I urge you to support H.R. 2000, filed by Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi. On November 6th, 2012, the American citizens of Puerto Rico had a two question referendum on their political status. On the first question, a 54% majority voted to withdraw the consent of the governed to the current territorial status of Puerto Rico. That means that the current territorial status does not have the support of the American citizens of Puerto Rico. On the second question, 61% voted to request the admission of Puerto Rico into the union as a state, on equal footing with the other 50 states. H.R. 2000 recognizes this fact and makes an offer to the US citizens of Puerto Rico, to have the territory of Puerto Rico become the fifty-first state of the union.
