IF you’re considering visiting Puerto Rico, watch The Rum Diary, the film adaptation of Hunter S Thompson’s magnificently cynical early novel. Shot on the island (and starring Johnny Depp), it allows you to imagine being among the narrow streets and enjoying the hidden bars of this old, formerly Spanish island.

Before you know it, you’ll have booked a flight on British Airways’ relatively new (and, more importantly, direct) twice-a-week route from Gatwick to Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, located in the Isle Verde section of San Juan, minutes from the Condado area.

San Juan is the meticulously preserved heart of this easy-going Caribbean island.

The old town is the pearl of the area, a slice of Andalucian charm transported to the Caribbean. There are streets of beautifully restored houses, many in the Spanish revival style, with shutters and ironwork balconies overlooking quiet courtyards, which call to mind the hidden gems of Seville or Granada.

It’s a little bit of Spain and a large dollop of Latin.

Once you’ve worn out some shoe leather on the cobbled streets, take a seat at the bar at La Bombonera, a cafe that’s been dishing out cafes con leche and mallorcas (a divine, buttery sweet bread that’s toasted and sprinkled with sugar) since 1902. Their battered old coffee machine is rumoured to be more than 100 years old, and has seen some service. Regulars (who look as though they might have been around nearly as long) sit and enjoy lunch under framed sepia prints of old Puerto Rico. It’s an absolute joy.

If you still have an appetite after coffee and cakes, take a stroll to La Mallorquina, another characterful and venerable place for lunch. Try bacalhau (salted cod fish) from the specials chalked up by the door while you admire the handsome space and artfully aged mirrors hanging on the walls.

San Juan is big in cruising too – the second largest port in the Western hemisphere with over 700 home port sailings a year and regular visits by all the main cruise lines.

Perhaps by now, you’ve eaten your fill and decided to lay off the rum for a while. What you need is a trip to El Yunque. This mountainous subtropical rainforest (the only rainforest that belongs to the US Forest Service) contains waterfalls, 26 varieties of animal species found nowhere else in the world, panoramic views over the island – and all less than an hour’s drive from San Juan.

For a real change of pace, a short 25 minute hop by light aeroplane brings you to the altogether more tranquil island of Vieques.

Puerto Rico se coloca como destino de preferencia en el Caribe

El director ejecutivo de la Compañía de Turismo (CTPR), Mario González Lafuente, anunció hoy que Puerto Rico se coloca como destino de preferencia en el Caribe para eventos de clase mundial de carácter cultural, deportivo y gastronómico.

González Lafuente indicó como ejemplos el torneo de golf de la Asociación de Golf Profesional (PGA) “Puerto Rico Open” que comienza mañana, la magna exhibición “Del Greco a Goya” que inaugura en el Museo de Arte de Ponce el próximo 25 de marzo y brindará la oportunidad de disfrutar por primera vez en América de “un Prado fuera de Madrid”, y el festival gastronómico “Saborea” a celebrarse en los terrenos de El Escambrón del 21 al 22 de abril.

“Puerto Rico es un destino turístico que, además de sus bellezas naturales, su gente hospitalaria y sus excelentes hoteles y paradores, tiene mucho que ofrecer en el área de entretenimiento a sus visitantes”, dijo González Lafuente.

“El compromiso de la Compañía de Turismo es dar a conocer todas esas virtudes que hacen de la Isla un destino único en el Caribe. Puerto Rico se ha distinguido internacionalmente por la riqueza de su actividad cultural, destacándose siempre la música, las artes, el deporte y la gastronomía, elementos que fortalecen a la industria del turismo y la economía de la Isla”, indicó.

Uno de los eventos de mayor impacto en el ámbito musical y que se celebró recientemente en Puerto Rico fue el concierto del reconocido pianista Yanni, desde el Morro. “Con ‘Yanni Live at El Morro’, Puerto Rico se suma a la prestigiosa lista de monumentos mundiales elegidos por el músico griego como escenarios para sus conciertos, entre ellos el Taj Majal, el Acrópolis y la Ciudad Prohibida en China”, dijo.

“Esto servirá de vehículo para mostrar a todos sus seguidores, la majestuosidad del Castillo San Felipe del Morro, uno de nuestros mayores atractivos turísticos”, expresó el Director Ejecutivo de CTPR.

“Además de la transmisión internacional de este concierto, a partir del 16 de abril, la gerencia de Yanni tendrá disponible para la venta el vídeo de este lo que nos asegura que el concierto de Yanni desde El Morro recorrerá el mundo”, añadió.

Según explicó, el impacto económico de dicho concierto en la Isla ascendió a unos 11 millones de dólares y la proyección de Puerto Rico ante una audiencia de sobre 100 millones de personas alrededor del mundo.

Otros eventos de gran envergadura que se han realizado en Puerto Rico son: Encanto del Caribe, trasmitida por Spanish Broadcasting System y que trajo a la Isla artistas de la calidad de Marc Anthony; el evento deportivo Ironman; cuya próxima edición se celebrará el 18 de marzo en San Juan, el Puerto Rico JazzFest, del 29 de marzo al 1 de abril, y el Festival Casals, que concluye el 17 de marzo.

Señaló “La Campechada”, celebrado del 18 al 20 de noviembre de 2011 en honor al bicentenario de la muerte del insigne pintor puertorriqueño José Campeche, como un evento de carácter cultural que hizo brillar a la Isla como un destino variado en el área cultural.

Durante esos tres días, el Viejo San Juan se convirtió en lienzo para toda clase de expresión artística inspirada en la obra del artista: pintura, teatro, artesanos, multimedios, titiriteros, conciertos artísticos, e incluso, “3-D mapping” en la fachada de El Morro, dijo González Lafuente.
